Not illustrated. 1904 Excerpt: ...for November 3, 1905, and is of interest and importance, aside from the real contribution which it makes to previously existing knowledge of the.efficiency of the mechanism for securing seed dispersal, possessed by that ubiquitous plant, the Canada thistle, Carduus arvensis, in that it gives us a method for working out similar problems for other species which have like adaptations. Students of plAnt distribution are constantly finding plants in unexpected places remote from their normal habitat, and are accustomed to attribute their dispersal to the wind, where this is possible, but there is very little actually known of the capability possessed by the seeds of our native plants for remaining suspended in the air. The methods described in the present paper for working out the problem of the thistle-down, are sufficiently simple and direct to be used by high school pupils who are sufficiently advanced in the use of the compound microscope to make accurate measurements with the micrometer, and who have had some practice in working simple practical problems in mensuration and physics. By using the achenes of other plants than the thistle, some very interesting exercises could be devised, which would serve not only to demonstrate the effectiveness of the adaptation of the pappus to secure seed dispersal, but would also give the pupils work which would have more than usual elements of originality in it. Studies might be made by similar methods upon the efficiency of the various aeroplane devices by means of which the seeds of so many species are left for a longer or shorter time in the air after leaving the parent plant.
